The One Mile Deep Grand Canyon National Park
This great National park is found in the northern part of Arizona. The city of Flagstaff is some 75 miles to its south, and one can take about half an hour to get to the South Rim Visitor’s Center of the canyon. The South and the North Rim Visitor’s Centers are only 10 miles apart, but there is no short cut and one has to cover a distance of over 200 miles in order to move from one end to the other.
The Grand Canyon is one of the most fascinating attractions not just in the US, but worldwide. It is made up of many canyons which are intertwined into the more complex Grand Canyon. The canyon is very large, covering up to 200 miles in length and between 10 to 15 miles in width. Some rocks are exposed and these take many colors depending on many factors, mainly weather elements. The deepest parts of the canyon are found along the Colorado River channel. It is no wonder that this natures’ great feature is a wonder of the world.
Of the two visitor’s centers, the South Rim Visitor’s Center is the favorite travel destination for many tourists. This is due to three main reasons; the first one being the excellent and numerous view points that it offers, the second reason is due to its many facilities as compared to the North Rim, and lastly it is to do with accessibility whereby it is easily accessible. Another major setback to the North Rim Visitor’s Center is the fact that it remains closed for almost eight months, from October to May. Some tourist operators, mainly from Las Vegas prefer the West Rim, though it is quite shallow and not as intriguing as one would expect. However, they are usually drawn to it because of its proximity.
The Grand Canyon Airport is located a few miles to the south of the South Rim Visitor’s Centre. It is a small airfield but well equipped to offer Helicopter and Airline tours of the canyon. Another available means of transport is the Grand Canyon Railroad excursion trains, which ply between the South Rim Visitor’s Center and Williams Arizona.
The best view points are usually taken from the South Rim Trail, and this is a favorite spot for many visitors who come calling. However, there is a part of this vintage point that remains inaccessible to automobiles as from May through October. The way leading to the Desert View is usually open and many people like it since it also offers excellent views into the Canyon. Some people usually take a mule ride into the canyon for that lasting experience. These rides are offered as either half day or overnight rides. However, the only challenge is that booking needs to be way before the travel date for reservations.
The other unique way to experience the Grand Canyon wonder is through hiking down into it. The favorite route preferred by many for hiking is the Bright Angel Trail. Lastly, when planning to visit the Grand Canyon one should always remember to book in advance for hotel reservations because they are always full.
